They were mostly interested in furs.
France explored the Atlantic coast, the St. Lawerence River, the Ohio Valley, the Mississippi River during the 17th and 18th centuries. They settled mostly in what became Quebec, and along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. For instance they founded Pittsburgh at the "Great Forks" of the Ohio River and New Orleans at the foot of the Mississippi River. They were more interested in furs than settlement. Eventually all their settlements became part of the the United States and Canada.
