I'm trying to answer the question of whether or not animals has ethics and as a result I first need to know what does it mean to have ethics and/or what does it take to have ethics. i.e language, thoughts, etc.

I wouldn't rule out the fact that animals have a type of ethics.

Lionesses will 'choose' to adopt a dead mother's cubs or not as the case may be. This could be construed as an ehical decision.

The same goes for many species in this instance.

Having ethics means believing some actions to be right and others wrong, so -- leaving aside what right and wrong are -- it at least requires being able to believe, and to know about actions. An animal that cannot do both of those things, cannot have ethics.

Ethics only applies to people. Ethics usually involves a controversial issue and you decide to do the right thing or not.
