Hello,
(ANS) Frankly, I DON'T like much of whats termed contemporary art. In fact I wouldn't call much of it, art really anyway!! Its often a very gray area.
Much of the work by people like Damien Hurst is pretentious rubbish OK! so its original pretentious rubbish.
Sorry! to say this but in my opinion having been to art school & trained as a photographer. There is no! artistic skill involved in what they make, no years on learning to draw, no years of honing skills with a paint brush, no! years of progression in their personal techniques as shown in their craftsmanship.
Damien Hurst is simply an ideas man, once he's had an idea he doesn't even make the stuff he pro-ports are his? He has a factory with a small army of assistance who make the works for him, it comes off a Damien Hurst assembly line. So IMO more fool the people who pay millions for such utter non sense.
**One of the few people in contemporary art who I do have (hold in) great respect is Andy Goldsworthy. His ideas & art work are based on years of skill, years of working with natural materials, his work shows both progression & development of the artists skills. His ideas & observations are both beautiful & original and more thought provoking than Hursts. Andy Goldsworthy isn't on a massive ego trip and doesn't aim just to milk as much money from people as possible. And so for that reason I have far more respect for him.

A close friend of mine suggested that the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan would better serve the community if it was turned into a parking garage. I pointed out that the MoMA houses a large collection of Impressionist Art and he quickly changed his tune. I think it's a terminology thing. Most people associate "Modern Art" and "Contemporary Art" with the bogus stuff produced in the 80's where you had a blank canvas except for a pear sized red circle. There's good contemporary art and there's really aweful contemporary art. The same can be said about any other form of art, too. The notion of only painting qualifying as art... well, I've never known anyone that ignorant. After all, writing, poetry, sculpture - this is all art.

For the most part I do like Contemporary art. Contemporary art can be defined variously as art produced at this present point in time or art produced since World War II. The definition of the word contemporary would support the first view, but museums of contemporary art commonly define their collections as consisting of art produced since World War II.
Although the above artist you have named are producing contemporary art by definition this would not describe the style of art by these artist. I would consider their art to be conceptual, neo conceptual or shock art. I do not like the above named artist.
I like impressionist contemporary art. I also like some botanical and landscape contempary art. It tends to not be so cluttered. For instance I like a painting with one tree in a large green pasture with a pretty sky as opposed to a lot of trees and other things crowding the scene.

some of the big twirling models that would look good in public i kinda like. but i think that the idea of contemporary art and how people use it is in a bad way and a lot of it isnt really art. stuff such as the unmade bed which took weeks to make? i dont consider that art.
the best kind of art is surrealism. like vladimir kush, salvador dali and of course the other ones such as picasso

I always think of the story of the king and queen parading through their Kingdom naked because the Taylor told them it was a new kind of fashion. There is of course big money in it and I suppose if you are young, arty, rebellious and you take the rich, pompous and extremely gullible so called intelligentsia for a ride along with their money it must be very satisfying and you have not hurt anybody by doing so.

They are not artists that appeal to me. But different art speaks volumes to different people and I do enjoy seeing an alternate perspective.
