99.9% of new lappys come with super-multi DVD writers ... so I wouldn't get too stressed about the CD-DVD drive ... processor speed and Ram are the two important factors ... in both cases the bigger the number the better ... the sweet spot for a laptop should have a core2 duo at least 1.66 (1.8 -2.0 in mid-level lappys) and up to 2.4 and a min of 1GB ram ... 2 is better ...Good Luck :)

Writers will actually BURN a DVD or CD while a reader will only read a DVD or CD. All burners will also read.

If you are buying a new laptop, get a DVD-RW drive which can read all media, and can write both DVD-R one time burn disk, as well as DVD-RW disks which can be erased and reused.

It would not hurt to upgrade to a double layer burner as well. These can use double layered disks which hold twice the data as a standard disk.

A DVD/CD Reader only reads the two disks (dvds and cds), and DVD/CD Burners you can get a blank DVD or CD and copy music and/or movies to the disk.
