If we are to remain free, we must also understand that we assume a certain amount of risk for such freedom. Hitler's Homeland Security did more to protect the state than to protect the citizenry, just as our own Department of Homeland Security will continue eating away at our personal freedoms. -RKO- 12/11/07

During wartime freedoms are reduced in reaction to the outside threat to make the country more secure. During the Civil War Lincoln stoped habius corpus to persue war protestors; during WWII we had Japaneese internment camps. Later these steps were removed once the threat was over.
