Oh, you are such a guy!
Even though your mom may have paid for the Christmas present you brought her, she appreciates the thoughtfulness, the attention you're giving her, the tangible token of your love for her, and the time and effort it took to think of, find, select, buy, and wrap the present.
Moreso with married couples.
Now the gift doesn't have to be expensive, or even something you get from a store. You might take your wife out on a special outing to a favorite spot you both love. You might give her gift coupons for special favors or chores. She might get you a copy of your favorite movie on DVD, or even do a special Christmas striptease for you in your bedroom. (No, it's not unholy, not between husband and wife, and not if they both enjoy it and give and receive it freely.)
The point is to spend a little time and effort in giving a special surprise or token that says, "I love you, I'm thinking of you, and I want to please you."
Merry Christmas!

It's the wonder and joy of someone you love picking out a gift for you that they think you will enjoy without having to buy it yourself.
Hardly a waste of money or an obligation.

So you treat all gifts as representations or manifestations of money? What a sad sad life you must lead. Ever stop to think that it's not what it is or how much it costs that matters, it's that someone thought enough about you to get something they think you'd want?

It's the thought that counts. It's that, that person went out and found the perfect gift after days of looking and wrapped it special for them.

awesome name. you're not supposed to focus on that. the thought and energy from the person buying the gift specifically for you is what counts.

Exactly! It is about someone doing something for you and getting something that you would want and could use and you didn't lift a finger to get it.
