Many people observed the Atlas-Centaur fuel dump 12/10/07. From my location farther north than most observations it was in Perseus near the expected position of Comet Holmes. West-southwest at about 50 degrees elevation. Looking for other estimates of direction and height above the horizon. I'd like to try and calculate the actual position and altitude. Time and constellation in the background would be interesting but not necessary for this estimate. Best guess. Thanks to all.

I observed it from near Newcastle upon Tyne in northern England (latitude 55 degrees), first noticing it a minute or two after midnight, when it was low above the NW horizon in Pegasus. I'm afraid I didn't note an exact position because I quickly realised from binocular viewing that it was moving (and not a comet!), but looking at my star map now, I'd say that initially it was somewhere in the region of the Pegasus/Andromeda/Lacerta border. It then drifted across the sky, and by 12.30 it was at an elevation of 45 degrees, in Andromeda. By about 12.50 it was nearly as high in the sky as Holmes and the Double Cluster, close to the edge of the Milky Way. Hope this helps!
