I'm in Missouri. I'm thinking that 30 years ago, December usually was cold enough that we just had snow instead of these temperatures that lead to so much freezing rain every year now. But we always had ice storms, just not as often.
It's not extreme cold that is a problem in this type of weather, it's temperatures right at the freezing point that cause them. If it were 10 or 20 degrees warmer, it would just be a deep snow like we used to have, and not so slick.
But many of us are the type that take such storms in stride, at least in rural areas like mine. I have a wood stove I can use to heat the house, and a generator I could use. But I probably won't bother if the electricity goes out, I have several oil lamps I can use for light. And of course, I have a good stock of beer and spirits laid on for the holidays, and if I need to run out for more, the big ol' 4 x 4 truck per the stereotype... gotta haul wood, you know ;)
Hey, it's Missouri. Like the saying has always been here: "If you don't like the weather here, wait 15 minutes and it will change."

Having lived through an ice storm that knocked power out for more than a few million people for a week and longer, I can assure you that few of them are worrying about global warming. It was a wondrous scene, all those trees bent over under the weight of the ice, but at night in the middle of a dark dark city, it wasn't so wonderful, it was actually kind of scary. I really feel for what those people are going through.

Global warming is change in climate.
Those people are dealing with weather.
Weather and climate are two different things.

the people in those states are too busy thinking about keeping warm, getting the things they need, and staying alive than they are thinking about "global warming".
