i would like to argue that presents is the preferred term because most are given out of obligation rather than genuine desire, grace or love.. and it also reflects the general obligation to celebrate the season, rather than doing something out of one's own freewill and gumption.

While I think you have a valid point, I'll continue to call mine gifts. I don't really do it out of obligation...I think of it as an annual opportunity to give to my loved ones.

As i could write you a novel about this one, and get all the best answers, i think you are correct as most people feel obligated to "give" something to loved ones for Christmas. People who give gifts because they want to and not because they had to, SHOULD call them gifts. The point is not one to argue about though.

Well they are not free gifts and normally when you give one you expect one back in return. Is it really a gift ? Maybe it should be called an exchange.

You aren't "obligated" to do one damned thing, it's that little thing known as "free will" ever heard of it?
