Babe Ruth only hit three HRs for a kid in the stupid movie that they made about him about 70 years ago. In the same movie, they showed him in a bar ordering a milk. (-:
I believe he hit a HR for a kid named Johnny Sylvestri. The following spring training a man introduced himself as Johnny's uncle and told him the kid was out of the hospital and doing better. Babe said that was great. After the uncle left Babe turned to the reporters and said, "Who the hell is Johnny Sylvestri?" (-:
Babe had the record for most consecutive scoreless innings pitched in WS play helping the Red Sox to WS victories in 1916 and 1918.
Everyone knows his stats with NY. There never has been or will be a player in any sport to dominate and revolutionize the game like he did. When he hit his 54 HRs, he had more HRs, than half of baseball.
In his second last MLB game, when he played for the Boston Braves, he hit three HRs in the game. Quite the feat for someone well past his prime.
He married Ty Cobbs ex-wife.
Babe's first wife wanted a child and Babe somehow found one. No one really knew or would say where the child came from. A while after they had split up the first Mrs. Ruth died in a fire that some felt was suspicious. Not implicating the Babe, but more that some felt it may have been suicide.
Babe was thrown out trying to steal second against the Cardinals in game 7 of the 1926 WS. He is the only person that's ever ended a WS that way. He had 123 Career Stolen bases.
His career ERA in 163 games pitched was 2.28.
Yankee stadium was built in part to house the amount of fans that he drew.
I still like to believe that he called his shot against the Cubs in 1932, but there is contrary evidence out there saying that he was shooting off about the pitcher and jarring at the Cubbies' bench just before hitting the HR. When the reporters asked him after the game whether he called his shot, all he would say is that it made a great story.
These are just a few things... (-:

In 1920, the year after the Black Sox scandal, that scandal was going on. The reputation of baseball was at stake. That year, Babe Ruth hit 54 home runs to break his record of 29. Fans went wild. Despite the scandal, baseball was saved. It's reputation stain ignored.
He went on to be a role model and arguably the most famous man in the world before WWII.

Everything the first guy said but that's not all.
The most important thing was that he was a role model for kids and adults who had to live through the Great Depression. He made a huge difference to peoples lives during that time. He would walk around town signing autographs, which is unheard of nowadays or in any time period. He once even called his home run shot before he hit a home run on the next pitch.
