the biggest risk humanity has ever taken was to attempt to organize into large groups. aka countries, states, nations, etc.
since each human being is a unique individual, conflicts of opinion are inevitable. These differences of opinion will ultimately lead to conflict for limited resources. and I'm not talking about oil or good fishing lands, but simple things like Being in control. only one person/faction/ideal can be dominate at any given time, and everyone naturally desires it to be their own person/faction/ideal.
This compition can take the form of tribal leaders defending their positions in lethal single combat, or political rivals running aggressive opponent-bashing ad campaigns, or a country divided in civil war over the rights of local communities to govern based on ethical standards significantly different from other communities within the country.
When humanity first started to create these social organizations there was no historical points of referene, no one knew where it could lead. There were so many ways it could go wrong, and over history we've seen it fail so many times in so many ways. Only after billions of deaths over hundreds of years have we finally seperated our population into groups that hold mostly similar ideals.
