Depending on where you live in the world some sports are more common than others. Where I live lacrosse is quite common, though I'd suspect that in places other than North America it would be considered uncommon.
I played lacrosse for many years and still enjoy the odd scrimmage game. It's referred to as "the fastest game on two feet" by many.
Lacrosse is one of the oldest organized sports in North America. At one point it was a field game / ritual played by First Nations people in Upper Canada.
It's also one of the roughest sports in the world, and very little protection is worn in a sport where slashing and cross checking are considered part of the game:

Both javelin throwing and pole vaulting are favorites. Both also offer advantages in real life from time to time. Can't get into it here, though.
