rather than frighten them?

Put in perspective, terrorism is a trivial threat to most Americans..

Breaking the bank to fund a phoney war on the other hand, is not.

I think that the fact that it was terrorists that used OUR planes to destroy the twin towers AND kill thousands of people means that terrorism is a viable threat.

By striking back at terrorists, the government is attempting to reassure us that they are on it to keep that type of tragedy from happening again.

It seems to be Congress who politicizes it.

I agree. Why is the Bush administration helping the terrorist to terrorize Americans by constantly reminding us of 911 and telling us how awful the terrorist are and how they want to kill us. The terrorist wanted to terrorize Americans and it worked. Some would rather attack innocent people and go bankrupt because in their twisted minds we are fighting the terrorist in Iraq. Funny we never get an account of how many terrorist we have killed and captured in Iraq except for an occasional reference on a small scale. You would think we would have found a terrorist camp or school or something since we are spending billions of dollars in Iraq. Wouldn't that be useful and helpful information to reassure Americans that we are really making a difference against the war on terror.
I find the statement that if we leave Iraq the terrorist will follow us home ridiculous. Sadly some really believe this statement. I have more faith in our Military then to think the terrorist can just invade our country without getting blown up.

Terror is the way for Terrorists to get their point across and Terror is the way in which a government can frighten their people into willingly handing over their freedoms...

It should be the goal to reassure but then people will calm down, start thinking straight, and realize what has been stolen from them!

Actually, the goal of terrorism is to forcefully coerce a government to act in the way you desire them to act.
But I agree with your other assessment. Just look at the 2004 and 2006 campaign ads for proof. It is all fear-mongering. The government wants us to be afraid so that we will support the bogus war.
Unfortunately, it is working on most conservatives...
To the fourth answerer: Actions speak louder than words. He may have said that, but he has used fear-mongering as a tool innumerous times.

Actually, Michael, fear-mongering has been a talking point for a few years...have you been living under a rock?

So after a few years of beating up the administration for not doing enough to stop 911, the new talking points are " Bush is just trying to scare everyone about terrorism." Amazing how easy you guys shift from one to the other.

In most administrations , that would be the case. Now with GWB. He "uses" the threat of terror in order to get votes.

When in reality, you have a far greater chance of drowning in a bathtub than getting killed by a terrorist.

Ah yes, but we now live in the age of spin you see. Many governments want more control and power over people's lives. So how could they spin the terror attacks in order to gain more power? By making people terrified that every Muslim secretly wants to cut their head off.

And of course the fact that Bush can have lots of VERY profitable wars. Oh, profitable for him and his corporate buddies, not you the tax payer. But since when did you matter?
