Christians believe it is the holy city because it is the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a church built at the spot where Jesus was crucified as well as the place where he was supposed to have been buried.

Muslims revere it as the holy city because it is the spot where the Prophet Muhammad is supposed to have ascended to heaven.

Jews consider the city sacred because of the Western Wall, which is the last remaining part of the great Temple that the Biblical figure King Solomon built (and that the later King Herod expanded).

The Jews had their temple in Jerusalem.

Jesus was persecuted in Jersalem and then crucified nearby.

Mohammed (peace be upon him) was taken into heaven in Jerusalem.
