3 Guys walked into a Motel for the night, the rate was $300 for the room, so the three men paid $100 each...

Two hours later, the owner had realised that he had overcharged them by $50, that the room should of been $250. He called the bellboy up and gave him the $50 to give to the guys. While the bellboy was walking up he thought to himself " I'll put $20 in my pocket and give the guys back $10 each "...

By giving back the $10 each, the men had paid $90 each for the room, making the total cost of $270 for the room, but the bellboy still has the $20 in his pocket, making the total $290. Were the original payed figure was $300.

3 x $100 = $300 (old Price)
$10 was given back for overprice making room $90 each
3 x $90 = $270 (new price)
plus the $20 in bellboys pocket
equalling $290..... WHERE DID THE OTHER $10 GO TO??

you added when you should have subtracted...in other words the bellboy's share is not the difference between the price paid ($270) and the original price ($300). Rather, it's the difference between the $270 and the actual cost of the room ($250). So the calculation should go like this:

3 x $100 = $300 (old Price)
$10 was given back for overprice making room $90 each
3 x $90 = $270 (new price)
minus the $20 in bellboys pocket
equalling $250

so I think I have the answer - the guys pay $100ea. x 3 = 300
then subtract $30 because they each got 10 back, making what they paid (what is in the motel safe) $270, but subtract 20 that went into the bellboys pocket so therefore in the hotel safe there is $250, 20 in the bellboy's pocket, and 10 back to the guys, 10 x3 is 30, and 250 + 20+ 30 is 300, which is the original amount.

Nope, there is no missing $10....

when you calculated 3 * 90 =270

That includes the 20 that the bellboy took:

If the owner returned 50, he has 250 with him (or in the register, whatever). Then the bellboy took 20, that's 270 and the last 30 was returned to the guys.
