Entropy measures the spontaneous dispersal of energy: how much energy is spread out in a process, or how widely spread out it becomes. The concept of entropy emphasizes that nature tends to go from order to disorder in isolated systems.
All living things are the same because they are constantly going against entropy; harnessing energy and forming other isolated systems (offspring). Which means all living things are in a struggle to maintain order within their systems, all while being in a system (the universe) that is inherently disorderly. This disorder of the universe is what drives evolution, as only those isolated systems that can sufficiently harness the available forms of energy most efficiently can continue to reproduce.
I don't think we can be absolutely certain that all living things need substances like water, or particular temperatures, as scientists have shown organisms surviving in some of the most perceivably inhospitable environments.
