Dry ice is basically solidifed carbon dioxide stored under high pressure. It is special because as soon as you release the pressure, the solid carbondioxide undergoes sublimation and converts itself into gaseous carbon dioxide without going through the liquid phase. I know in many of the movies it is used to create a mist near the ground which is kind of really cool. Because dry ice is heavy so it stays on the ground even after vaporizing.

It's solidified Carbon Dioxide. It's called "dry" ice because it sublimes, which means it passes directly from solid to gas without a liquid phase. It is very cold and will damage skin if touched. In most towns you can buy dry ice from a welding gas supply depot or sometimes from a pharmacy if you order it in advance.

Dry ice is made by carbon Dioxide, not water. That's why it is "dry". It requires a very low freezing point to be able to solidify a gas. It is kept in a container.

Dry ice is the genericized trademark[1] for solid carbon dioxide. It is commonly used as a versatile cooling agent. Dry ice sublimes, changing directly to a gas at atmospheric pressure. Its sublimation and deposition point is -78.5 °C (-109.3 °F). Its enthalpy of sublimation (ΔHsub) @ -78.5 °C (-109.3 °F) is 199.0 kJ/kg (245.5 BTU/lb). The low temperature and direct sublimation to a gas makes dry ice a very effective coolant, since it is colder than ice and leaves no moisture as it changes state.[2]

Its special because its made out of a gas (Carbon Dioxide) instead of a liquid(water). There are hella fun things you can do with it too!
You can pput it into a water bottle with just like a 1/4 cup of water shut it, throw it and it will explode. Its hella tite, but b careful, too much contact with your skin will burn it, and the ice evaporates really fast so you don't have alot of time with it, even if you put it in the freezer.

Discharge all the co2 from the tank on your paintball gun into a towel.
Open up the towel and, viola, you have dry ice!

It's "special" because:
1. It's so cold (relative to water ice), and
2. It sublimes directly from solid to a gas, so it doesn't create any wetness.

dry ice is a piece of ice that is so cold that if you touched it with you're bare hands then your hands would burn and it would come off till you start bleeding really hard. my brother did it. so be careful when you play with it.
