It probably means that you should see a doctor right away. Here are some general guidelines:

--dark red/black blood in the stool is nearly always serious. Get to a doctor ASAP.

-- bright red blood that turns the water in the toilet pink is serious -- it could indicate ulcerative colitis, cancer, or other unpleasant conditions. Again see a doctor promptly -- your life could be at stake.

--bright red blood that is just a small smear on the paper (as if somebody used a red marker on the paper) is probably caused by an anal fissure or hemorrhoids. Not an emergency. You can try some over-the-counter treatments or just increase the amount of fiber in your diet. If the bleeding increases or doesn't go away in a month, see your doctor. Some hemorrhoids shrink with some simple treatment, but others may require surgery. Anal fissures usually heal without complications.

Be sure to get plenty of fiber in your diet. Use something like Metamucil if you don't like fruits, veggies, or whole grains. Fiber is crucial to colon health. So is water.

Good luck!

If you were having other symptoms like constantly getting light headed and feel like vomiting, that is an early sign of a stomach ulcer. I know because I talked to my doctor and that is something you really need to look into if it keeps reoccurring because stomach ulcers are very dangerous! Hope this helps! :)

I would see a doctor if it continues. It could be something serious such as Chrons disease or a similar disease. You may have cancer somewhere in your GI tract. These are the most serious possibilities though.

did you have to push hard to have your bowel movement? Most often when we see fresh blood in our stool, it is because the stool was too large, too hard and caused internal hemmorhoids to bleed. Suggest you drink at least two liters of water every day to keep those stools soft and easy to pass.
