you HAVE to HAVE a router to connect wirelessly
It is probably just a setting...if you contact the router manufacturer they are usually really good about tech support over the phone

You need a wireless network adapter within your computer to link to a wireless connection. So, I would check the information that came with your laptop or the manufacturer. If you do not have an adapter, you can have one installed within the computer or you can you an external adapter that you plug into your laptop - Linksys makes a very good one. You also need to make sure you have a wireless router and not a wired router. Setting up a wireless LAN in your home is really easy, with the right equipment. If you have a wireless router, and a wireless adapter in your computer - you need to make sure that you have a connection setup within your laptop.
You cannot make a wireless network without a router. The router is what sends and receives the signal of the internet connection. Routers are generally not that expensive. The only other way to connect wirelessly without a router, is to go somewhere that has wifi.

You are not giving us enough information. There are more questions then answers. When you have an internet connection, is it wireless or from a wired/DSL connection? If you don't already have a router then where is THAT signal coming from? What are you unpluging? What signals are you seeing? If you are trying to connect to someone elses wireless network you may need a WEP key. To make your 'own' network you need to start with a service provider and then buy a wireless router if they do not provide one for you. Anything to add folks?

Hello:
Ok well first off please make sure you have a wireless network card in the laptop that can pickup the wireless network or some kind of usb device. If you get a list of wireless networks then you must have an ability to read them, however a lot of people who just broadcast their signal everywhere do something called encrypting that will keep just anyone from getting in.
You will need some kind of device to broadcast the signal.
If you have the list of the networks then I would say connect to each one and check how much data is being sent and received.
I would also try to update your driver for your wireless internet device on the laptop
I hope this helps

First, make sure your labtop carries a built in wireless capabilities. If not buy a wireless card.
Second, get a router so that you have less problems, but make sure you have high speed internet.
Thirdly, test everything out.
Remember their are a lot of technological gadgets out there and you need to learn a lot of the terms used. Now there are some cards that can pick up internet a mile away. But you need to decrypt the passwords. Thats why you should get your own router.

First thing I would try is leave the computer disconnected from the 'hard wire' internet upon bootup. The computer should then search for wireless networks in range. Some of them may be open but some may have security settings. When you ask to connect to a wireless network does the computer ask you for a passphrase? If so you are trying to connect to a secure server and you will not be able to connect to that wireless network without hacking it or getting permission from the owner.

you computer has a buit-in wireless card, which scans for routers around you (thats if you don't have one of your own).then it lists the routers (available networks) the ones with the most bars are closest to you.
now on the list you look for an unsecured network to connect to.
you can't connect to any thing with a padlock sign next to it, it means its secured and u need the key or passcode from the owner to connect to this router.
now about the little bars on you computer- all thats telling you is that you computer can connect to this network or wireless router if its unsecured or you have access to it(network key or passcode).
you can't make a wireless connection without a router. because the router distributes the signals from a modem to you computer.

What are you unplugging? The AC power adapter or a network cable? When you refresh your wireless networks do you see any? You have to have a wireless router or access point somewhere to receive wireless Internet, unless you use a wireless card from a cell provider, and those use the cell providers network (CDMA, GSM, etc) to provide network connectivity.

Nope. You need two pieces to do a wireless network: a wireless network adaptor and some kind of router. That's pretty much how it goes... BUT if you have a wireless card in your laptop, you should be able to leech off of others' wireless networks.

You need a signal to get wireless such as a router. You could find a hotspot that offers it.
All you need is a wireless card with a router that can do wireless
