I am 14 years old, people have told me my hands are amazing and I can catch anything that comes my way. Im not the fastest kid youll meet but i can run my routes and all. I didnt try out for the freshman team this year and I want to if not playing this year will affect my chances of playing later on through high school and maybe even college.I am about 5 foot eight and i weigh 144 lbs. I have a great jump and spectacular catching abilities. When I catch the ball, I can juke and spin and get people out of my way. I am doing very well academically and I also wanted to know if that is a plus to be a football player in school.
So, I wanted to know what kind of future I can expect if I play as good as I can and I put my mind to it.Also, if you can give me tips to how I can become better at the WR postition it will be greatly appreciated. Any agility/speed drills could help alot.
Thanks!

That sounds like a slot receiver. Their job is to block on run plays and hunker down (in football that's like for 2 seconds) in an open spot or play short and medium plays and then run for more. Generally the slot receiver can determine if there is a run or a pass. That's because they are guarded by either a line backer or the free safety. You should be able to bulldoze over the free safety for the run and outrun the linebacker for a pass. You don't have to be tall to play slot, but you need to be able to cut quickly and catch balls generally thrown fast, low and in front of you. Then you need to dodge the tackle and run for more yards. So a three yard pattern could turn into a 8+ pass play. Although Jerry Rice wasn't playing slot, those were the patterns he would run. Practice side steps, sprints, low catches and blocking. Corner Back Dieon Sanders used this drill to practice his quickness. It takes two people, a tennis ball and a flat hard surface. You will have your back tuned away from the other person. The other person will hold the tennis ball at his head level and yell, "Go" and he drops the ball. You will turn around and grab it before it hit the ground three times. Each time you make the catch move farther away from the person. The story that featured this said he was making the catches while being 18 feet from the other person. Cris Carter played slot.

1. Run regularly to build speed and stamina.
2. Learn to take hits from big kids. Trust me, receivers get the worst in that department.
3. Work on agility. Watch some Adrian Peterson or Barry Sanders videos to see what I'm talking about.
4. Learn to be able to catch balls thrown high, low, behind, and in front of you. The best receivers of all time are able to do it.

1st off, you won't know if you can play on the high school team if you DON'T TRY OUT!!

2nd, work on your YAC, &try & keep your hands off the DB(so you don't get caught commiting a penalty). Just use you juking ability to try & get around him once you've got the ball.

find a running coach. i played wideout and i wasnt naturaly fast, but my running coach taught me to make the most of my speed (by keeping my arms moving and close to my body). it raised my 40 time almost a half second.
hope it helps.
