He was an interesting sort, well ahead of his time. He was all for equality betweent the sexes. I'm not sure how well this ties in with your question, but as a Utilitarian, Mill felt that only those who were educated and qualified should be allowed a say in what is "Good" for the masses. If you were not educated in music, you should not be allowed to decide what we the people should be exposed to, and so on, and so on... This then, would allow people to be free of the burden of having to choose.

Based on his principle, the United States was the creation of men who believed that each person has the right to do what he wants with his own life as long as he does not interfere with his neighbors' pursuit of happiness. The problem comes when his neighbor's idea of happiness is persecuting others.
