I do think he got out in the end and that was confirmed by the quick 5 second scene after the firefighters get him out where they show Samuel L Jackson holding the glass of cognac saying "Well done, Mr. Inslin. Well done." That confirmed to me that he was the first person to escape alive and he destroyed the room in doing so. If Cusack had never really left the room there would be no need for that scene with SLJ.

Regarding the scene right at the closing with his daughter's voice on the tape recorded, some people speculate that it meant to show that his ex-wife was now trapped in there. While that is an interesting interpretation of that scene, again the SLJ "Well done" scene wouldn't have a place in the movie. I think the daughter's voice was just a confirmation to the ex-wife that everything he claimed happened really did.

The room sort of made him go insane enough to kill the badass room. His tape recorder became proof that the room is haunted or something. The girl kind of scared the **** out of me. I can't believe no one thought of that before. He might be just shocked that the room was actually haunted like that.

Yes. It's supposed to mean he didn't imagine it because his wife heard it on the tape.

I wish they would have ended it the same way Stephen King ended the short story.

They ended it where now the mother heard the proof that he talked to their daughter. What that meant, I have no idea. I think there's going to be some kind of sequel.

A big question of the film was whether or not it all was happening in his mind. The tape recording showed his wife that he didn't imagine it at all.

To me, there's only one thing the ending could mean, and that is, there will have to be a sequel. If there's not, that was a horrible ending.

I think it meant that everything that happened, actually did happen. It wasn't an illusion on his part. I guess....I was a little confused, too and I saw it twice!
