If you like adventure, many of the Chinese restaurants in China Town have a daily special. It used to be called "Woh Choy". You'll see ordinary-sized Xeroxed sheets of paper with Chinese writing on them in the window. The chef goes down to the produce, fish and meat markets early in the morning, picks what looks good to him. You get one dish per person plus rice and soup; that is, if there are four of you, four dishes; six, six dishes, etc. You eat family style, so everyone gets to taste everything.
It is cheap by comparison, WAY more fun that the combination plate, you will probably get a dish you've never had before, and the more people in your party (up to 8) the more dishes you get to try.
As to what to do, there are a million things. You can walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, for instance. It's free but parking isn't; take a bus to the bridge.
If you can all put on dress shirts and nice pants, you could go spend $5 each for a coke in the Carnelian Room, 54 floors above the city. Go in the afternoon, nurse it for half an hour.
The California Culinary Academy trains chefs that will go on to work in cruise ships and fancy resorts. One night a week they have a buffet where you get to eat the "lessons" for about 50% of what you'd pay in a normal restaurant. (A normal restaurant with an extensive wine list, cloth napkins and real flowers; it isn't cheap compared to, say, Denny's.) Call them and ask.
SF has symphony, ballet and opera. Just before the performance you can get seats at half price or so from people standing on the front steps whose dates haven't shown, or whose wife has come down with the flu. (Except for the Nutcracker; it is always sold out and people will go even if they are dead.)
"What to do" depends on your interests, ability, age and budget. I loved ballet as a college student; had season tickets in the nosebleed section. I liked to hike, too. My personal prejudices are not universal, however. SF has major league culture, sports, shopping, parks and people watching.
Your library should have a guidebook. Check it out in both senses of the word.
Davis has more ethnic restaurants for its size than any other town I've ever seen. There is one run by vegan lesbians, for instance. They have Czech, Afghan, Nepalese, Indian. There is a Chinses or Mexican place on almost every block.

The Bay Area as a whole has some of the best dining in the country. The warf is just one thing, see the Golden Gate, Lombard Street, Giadelli's Square (chocolate), go to Union Square for all the shopping, ride the street cars, stop in at a real Irish Pub for an Irish Coffee in Union Square (the hotel there invented the drink!).
There is much, much more. What about going to "Silicon Valley", lots to do there and great restaurants too. Just so many, can't list them all. For a quick but excellent lunch, stop at the new, very large Whole Foods in Cupertino, wow, that food section and dessert section is to die for! Not too far down the street is an Italian restaurant, can't remember the name, but it is excellent too. Should be almost across the street from Whole Foods. Don't miss it! Enjoy!
