I am wanting to get some publicity....and maybe get a story done on my small business.

Call your local papers or whomever you want to write the story. Tell them what the story is about and how it will benefit them as well as you if they put it in. You can also find places on the newspapers online website were you can actually submit the story and then they decide if they want to use it.

there are many ways to get publicity. Usually newspapers have a press kit or media kit. Look into how the target paper receives these.
I would recommend reading about marketing if you cannot hire a pr firm. I recommend any of the "Guerrilla Marketing" books, check Amazon. They are great and full of great tips!

The easiest way is to write it for them. Many local publications will welcome a short piece as long as it has an 'angle' and isn't just blatent advertising. Think of an unusual aspect to your business, or a human interest angle, write up a few paragraphs and sent it to the editor - don't be shy, just do it!

If you are doing something special, unusual or beneficial for the community, call your local paper and offer to be interviewed. Other than that you have to pay for advertising like anyone else.
