The PS3 is for every type of gamer that likes to play all types of game genres. The Playstation consoles (PS1, PS2, PS3) have had top selling games in almost every game genre:
Platformer: Jak and Daxter, Rachet and Clank, etc...
Action/Adventure: Uncharted Drakes Fortune, Shadow of the Colossus, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Metal Gear Solid series, etc...
RPG: Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts
Racing: Gran Turismo series, Motorstorm
Shooter: Resistance Fall of Man, Killzone, Haze (coming soon)
Figher: Tekken series
I've noticed that a lot of the Playstation console games don't focus a lot around First Person Shooters, they tend to focus more on all other game genres.
But I've noticed so far that the majority of the Xbox 360 games focus a lot on shooters. So basically I think that the PS3 is a console for someone that likes more diversity in their game selection. You really cant even think of several big Xbox 360 games without naming a bunch of shooters (Bioshock, Halo 3, Gears of War).

You have to love Metal Gear Solid's, and Devil May Cry's. I think It is for hardcore gamers, 360 is for Amature gamers, Wii is for Playful gamers.
A hardcore gamer is a gamer that will devote ones time into completing a game, and does not stop for any game. Hardcore gamers are the gamers that you see owning the hell out of everyone on a game(such as COD4) or the gamers you see with maxed out characters on turn-based games such as Final Fantasy X or The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
An Amature gamer is the kind of gamer that is not used to all types of games, and usually goes through the tutorials before starting each game. They are the kind that usually get 5 kills on a Halo 3 free-for-all match, or the kind of gamers that take monthes to complete certain games.
A Playful gamer is the kind that is willing to try anything, and that doesn't care if he/she wins or loses, as long as everyone had fun. They are the kind of gamer that do not care about games graphic wise or if they are a shooter, but if they are an all-around good game.

PS3 and the Xbox 360 really target the same types of gamers, which are older teenagers and above. It has everthing from action to sports to shooters to rpgs, but i would recomend getting a 360 cause it has more exclusive games right now. PS3 will be good in a year or so.

Currently... a gamer that can wait. The PS3 has, arguably, the worst current crop of games.
In general however Sony's strongest point is the RPGs that come out for their machines. Final Fantasy, for instance, is still exclusive to Sony consoles.
Sports games are about even between PS3 and Xbox360, however this year's crop favored 360 for better framerates.
A thing to keep in mind however is that since so few games are console exclusives now, most systems get all the games and it come to preference of company or controller, etc...

Only an obsessed fanboy would buy a PS3. Nothing is exclusive to it anymore, so why waste the money?!
See what I mean? Fanboys don't like to hear the truth, so they give my answer a low rating.....Nice!
