Proxima Centauri, a dim red dwarf star that cannot even be seen without a telescope. Alpha Centauri is the second closest star, nearly as close as Proxima, and is almost identical to the Sun. It is one of the brightest stars in the Earth's night sky but is not ever visible from north of the tropics.

The only thing that I would add is that Alpha Centauri A, B &proxima Centauri are all part of a 3-star system. They all orbit about a common center of gravity. Alpha Centauri A is, apparently, an almost perfect twin to our own Sun. (mass, luminosity, etc)
Proxima Centauri happens to be in that part of it's orbit that has it closest to us.

And the term "Alpha Centauri", properly speaking refers to these three as seen from Earth. Roughly translated it means "The brightest star in the constellation Centaurus". The system, though close by stellar standards, is far enough that it looks like only one star to the naked eye.

So when speaking of these stars as individuals, they are referred to as Alpha Centauri A, B or C.

Yes, Proxima Centauri.

It was discovered in 1915 by Robert Thorburn Ayton Innes, a South African astronomer who gave it the name "Proxima" (Latin for "closest"). (I know this because I used to work with Innes' grandson.) For more details, see

Venus is sometimes considered a star (it's called the Morning Star), and it would be closest.
