The individual generally thought to be the inventor of sudoku is Howard Garns, an architect from Indiana. His version of the game was called "Number Place". In the mid '80's, Number Place was taken up by the Japanese game company Nikoli and renamed "sudoku," which means 'single number', for the Japanese audience.
