At one point, the companies had all the power. They could pay their workers nothing wages, subject them to dangerous conditions, and exploit the work. And if you raised any problems with this, they would fire you and get someone to replace you. And you would end up at another company that was the same way. So workers unionized because they know the company couldn't afford to fire all of them. There are sill instances where companies try to exploit their workers, and the unions are able to fight for the workers. But there are also situations where the unions ask and get more then what the company can afford, and everyone loses.

The trade union, through its leadership, bargains with the employer on behalf of union members (rank and file members) and negotiates labour contracts with employers. This may include the negotiation of wages, work rules, complaint procedures, rules governing hiring, firing and promotion of workers, benefits, workplace safety and policies. The agreements negotiated by the union leaders are binding on the rank and file members and the employer and in some cases on other non-member workers.

So they could fight slavery.
Years ago, when the Rockefellers were building railroads, they built work camps. Paid the workers in scrip (Rockefeller money) and then charged scrip in the stores. Workers never made good ole US currency which would enable them to leave the work camps if they wanted.
Yep. Slavery led to unions.

To fight for decent treatment from their employers...befor the union movement.... six ten hour days was the norm...no vactions....no sick days.....
