i would do whatever i felt was necessary to protect my family

(edit)
with all due respect to bei yin, i'd prefer to go the 'introspective (blame the victim) route' in front of a jury than at the foot of a loved one's hospital bed or casket...is the answer to violence more violence? not in a philosophical sense, but i'm not about to sacrifice my family's safety for a principle-the bottom line is, if someone is attempting to hurt or kill someone i care about, there is no moral imperative or reason for me to allow them to succeed...like kenny rogers once sang, 'sometimes you've got to fight when you're a man'

Well, all these 17 answers are in the same tone. All want to answer violence with violence. That's the usual way and all those who want to use force are probably Christians, followers of Jesus? I'm not Christian but I believe that we have to change our attitude. Look around; has there something changed during the last several thousand years? There has been no time without wars and killing! War is present everywhere, not only between countries, but also between neighbors and even within families. Why? Because violence always is answered with violence. Shouldn't we at least start to question this destructive behavior?
Might it be a first step to ask why this person wants to hurt/kill you? Did you something that has caused this reaction? Did you reject this person? It is necessary to clear up the situation and not just react. Clear up means to find out about yourself, your attitude that might have caused the situation. It might be the fault of the other, he might be crazy, but do you think that this has nothing to do with yourself? It is too easy to give always the fault to the other and the outside, that's the normal behavior of people, always and everywhere. Do you think that's the only way? Or might it be that every thing is connected and has triggered the situation. So wouldn't the solution be to see both sides, understand both sides and try to change ones own attitude as a first step? I believe that not only the weapons have changed the Neanderthal human has used, but also the capability to deal with situations - or not?

Yes, if one has tried all possible alternative ways, then there is still the fight and one should be good prepared for it... But who even thinks about something else than the usual way to fight, eliminating that what disturbs? Who looks at themselves?

You have to do the paper work to get the police to cooperate.

Get a restraining order.

After you get a restraining order, the police will have to "by law" respond when your unpleasant person or stalker is caught violating that restraining order.

That's how you end up with a paper trail for the law to follow and cooperate.

In this manner, you are one step ahead of them in making their life so miserable that they become too much of coward to cause any harm to you or your family based on the fact that they are now known as the main suspect if they do anything at all.

I went through this with an ex boyfriend. I left town with nothing but the clothes I had on. Had a friend he didnt know drive me. Changed my name and everything. He finally went to jail for what he did to me about a year later. I still have no contact with any of my friends from then. Its been about 10 years ago. He threatened to burn down my parents and grandmothers house. I didnt have anywhere to go, so I left. Wish I could go back and do things differently, but things worked out in the end.

Eww- it would be SOOO on! My wife and I are not the home/family to invade. We've got a very protective African Lion Hound, and we're armed... both licensed to carry and conceal. I have Army combat training, and she's one tough lady too.... We'd stand ready to defend!!!!

We enjoy making Zombie survival plans, so we'd be sooo ready for an ordinary human, unpleasant or not!!!

That is why I own a hand gun! You can not count on the police arriving in time to save you or a love one.

I wouldn't ask/answer the question on Y!A leaving a potential record of evidence for what I may or may not do. I think in Latin that's called "mens rea" ... but hey.... sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Do you need any help?

I'd think my friendship with the owner of the garbage carting company down the street would finally prove itself useful.

I'd let the pros handle it.

you have a right to defend yourself, your family and your property. under circumstances that might lead to violence against you, etc. self defense with a gun would stop the problem. sometimes permanently
