The most horrible of crimes have often been committed by persons who had a religious upbringing or a very religious families.

Why is that?

I think this happens when the religion forgets common sense. It's one thing to believe in God or a Higher Power, it's another to try to control people with man made laws. Most "religions" are man made and frequently the ones founding it, have an agenda that God would probably not condone. The particular shooter in Colorado had been a member of a very strict Catholic group. We may never know what part of that congregation or the bylaws affected him. It's all a matter of degree. Some rules or laws are good for people and some demand unreasonable things. To know that this once religious man now states he hated Christians is truly sad.

while you may not understand this and i'm not going to argue one way or the other on the merit of your question, the clear answer is,

light rejected brings darkness

the christain concept of biblical sin, is that sin reveals itself in men. even the best men have sin in them and are subject to doing things that are uncalled for or evil.

people who have been exposed the godily teaching and reject it, tend to plunge into levels of darkness you may not graspe or understand. I'm not saying I understand the level of depravity.

it is a good question and you might look up the doctrine of sin in a conservative scholarly work on theology
