It boggles my mind to see five year olds that are bi-lingual. I can't imagin how it's done.

It is not that hard. The best way is to choose the language each parent wants to talk to the child and always talk to the child only in that language. Avoid as much as possible mixing or borrowing words from the language or switching languages. it gets even better when parents read to the child in their respective language, the kid's vocabulary increases and also begins to develop better reading comprehension skills.
