Could you recommend me some good Canadian writers/books please?

Read The Blind Assassin -- it is phenomenal. She is best known for The Handmaid's Tale -- which is terrific -- but The Blind Assassin is one of the very best novels I've ever read and I'm a high school English teacher who reads 1 -3 books a week... Trust me...

I've read many of these authors, and particularly recommend Douglas Coupland, Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje.

My favorite Canadian writer is Lucy Maud Montgomery who wrote The Blue Castle, Anne of Green Gables, Jane of Lantern Hill, Kilmeny of the Orchard and many more. They are more girl/woman books, however. (Though you may enjoy some of them, even so, because they include a lot of imagination.)

There's also Margaret Atwood who wrote The Handmaid's Tale.

Margaret Atwood.
She has a lot of books that are borderline fantasy, and they all are very good. Definitely makes you think.

Leonard Cohen has published several volumes of remarkable poetry, and his novel "Beautiful Losers" is like nothing else you've ever read.

Check out Mordecai Richler's novel "Joshua Then and Now." The movie based on the book is also pretty extraordinary.

Alice Munro's short stories have won international acclaim.
