An example of any two cycle machine....and then can you tell me why it is "two cycle"

Kare has the pricple correct but the statement that they do not have valves is wrong. They do have valves.
The name Two cycle is because they have a power stroke and exhaust stroke. Down and up. In a four cycle or " four stroke First the piston goes down drawing in fuel and air. Then uop to compress the air then the spark ignites the fuel and it goes down for the power stroke. Then back up for the exhaustt stroke.
Then it starts all over.

An example is the old Green Machine, the Lawn Boy lawn mower. They were two cycle machines. Another example is your 4 HP Toro snow blower. Your chain saw is another. You can tell a two cycle machine because you generally mix the oil with the gas. Two cycle engines have only a crank shaft and piston.... lets see, I used to know this. The four cycle engines have oil baths around the crank shaft, and keep the engine lubricated by an internal system of pumping oil throughout the engine. The two cycle engine doesn't have the oil bath... you don't have to "change the oil." Shoot.... I know that it has something to do with the very basic engine design. Sorry...

-Two-stroke engines do not have valves, which simplifies their construction and lowers their weight.
-Two-stroke engines fire once every revolution, while four-stroke engines fire once every other revolution. This gives two-stroke engines a significant power boost.
-Two-stroke engines can work in any orientation, which can be important in something like a chainsaw. A standard four-stroke engine may have problems with oil flow unless it is upright, and solving this problem can add complexity to the engine.
- It also makes the engines more affordable.
