We've seen thousands of products from lead paint to fish come out of China and cause health issues in the US. Is this a purposeful attack on our health, just a lack of care or responsibility, or an "innocent" mistake. Also what should be done about it? My personal feeling is ban products from those plants until they improve their safety record for at least one calendar year. Thoughts?

I doubt it is intentional - In the sense someone evil is rubbing his hand together saying "mwah ha ha" - I do believe it is intentional in the lack of standards which would make the product more costly to American consumers. I would gladly be willing to pay a few extra dollars for my daughters Dora doll, if safety standards were enforced and the plants supervised...Perhaps even brought back to America, what a thought! Sadly, it is not all the fault of those factories, but the big U.S. money makers who do not want to pay out the extra money it would take to hire U.S. labor or at least supervise the plants they have off American soil. It is incredibly difficult to buy a completely American toy...I have tried...It may be made in America but its components are made elsewhere...Lets all say together where Elsewhere is! China! Sorry..felt the need to babble on and on.

I think it might be the production supervisors that are "supervising" that are the problem. The workers might not even know about it, because thats what they are: workers. The supervision is probably careless. They just need better supervising. The U.S. or something should send coordinators or other people over to see what's going on, not just sitting here and shaking their heads.

It's nothing so insidious as that.

China is pushing its infrastructure hard to become competitive in the global market. Internal corruption is rampant. Corners are cut. They are bringing in poor, uneducated workers from the country side to work in their factories with little, or no training. No wonder mistakes are made...although I'm not sure I'd call them "innocent" mistakes.

Personally, I don't agree with banning their products.
Maybe we should somehow impose restrictions on the import from China and limit more and more goods until China is ready to take SAFETY seriously.
It's no wonder China is developing so quickly!!!

I don't think it is intentional. I think it is based on greed and sloppy trade policies. Our government was too quick to get these trade practices in place the last thing on their minds was safety of the consumer. I am all for banning products that are harmful to our us, children and pets.
