ASE does not "license" mechanics. They offer many tests were a technician can be certified in certain areas of automotive repair!

A good technician can make $50-$150k per year, depending on the shop and their level of skill!

It depends on a lot of things.

My husband is an ASE Certified Master Tech with an Associates in Automechanics, and he has 10 years of experience. He makes $35 an hour in Phoenix.

The smaller the city, the less you'll make (usually). The worse the neighborhood, the less you'll make (usually).

Just starting out, I'd say $15, maybe a little more, an hour. It will go up as you gain experience.

The best thing you can do to make more money is to do new things. In other words, don't get comfortable just doing Chevys or Fords (although dealerships usually pay well).
Also, get good at drivability. My husband would probably make more if he was better at that.

You can also Google "mechanic salary" and it should come back with some figures for cities close to you.

For a small intependent garage - $25-30K, for a luxury dealership - $70+K. Don't think too much of ase - it's just another scam like aaa, aarp, etc. It really doesn't take much to pass those tests. I've taken dozens over the years, and never failed. Actually, last time (I took two) I got 98% and 100%. And I'm not a mechanic - I'm an Engineer...
