No.
And they are also a bit much for simple protection - as alluded to by some of the answers - and a medium caliber pistol will do just fine to protect a homeowner from an intruder and it's much handier.
The only legitimate argument that I can think off for the AK-47 is perhaps as a deterrent weapon for a defensive military force - otherwise, the name says it all - assault rifle.

Since the AK-47 was invented as an assult weapon, it is only useful in the defense of ones life. You do not hunt with it. You kill the enemy with it. Your question reaks of political gun control-ism. While I would never own a gun, our constitution gives us the right to own guns. If you feel outlawing guns will make crime go away, then you are very uninformed. Criminals and those who want to do harm, will always find weapons. The only people gun control laws disarm are innocent law abiding citizens who are either collectors, or people who simply want to protect their home and family. How many gang members wait 2 weeks for a gun?? How many mafia members go through backgrouond checks? And before you start about children, which seems to be the mantra these days about EVERYTHING, a responsible gun owner will always make sure that the gun is locked away from youngsters, and they will teach their children proper gun safety. Sure, there are people out there who are not responsible. But so are automobile drivers. Unlike gun owners, Auto drivers propel a 2 ton killing machine down concrete strips everyday. More people die on our highways each year than die in gun related actions. Shouldn't we be more concerned about these killing machines than about guns?? The government loves a bad guy. They whip up a frenzy of debate about an issue till the people are shouting the same slogans as the government. They did it with tabacco, alcohol, drugs, medicine, and guns. Why not do the research for yourself. The Internet has about a zillion sites to choose from where you can look up facts and polls and all kinds of stuff to make an INFORMED decision on an issue. Personally, I do not like people like Ted Rall and Ann Coulter doing my thinking for me. I am old fashioned, and do my thinking for myself.

I have never seen a gun discharge itself.
I have seen people discharge a gun-
Guns don't kill people do.
I see no value in having an AK-47 but I don't collect guns nor do I have a use for an assualt rifle of any kind but that is just me..

AK-47s are the preferred weapon of terrorists all over the world, manufactured in the Soviet Union.
The real gun crowd uses American made, for the most part, unless you count the Beretta.

Nah not really. I've seen people use them at ranges. Poor accuracy and they are loud as all get out. Not to mention they kick like a drunken mule. The ballistics on the shells are good but, I wouldn't use one for anything..... especially not hunting.
It's a cheap weapon to spray bullets in a general direction basically.

No and as long as they continue to do what they were designed for I'm all for that.
By the way - guns DON'T kill - people do. Those that cannot comprehend this don't deserve a weapon of any kind. However, they can because the 2nd amendment gives them that right.

There are a lot of gun enthusiast who just like to target shoot and collect guns, and they have that right. Should we ban cars? We kill an awful lot of people with them.

You liberals will never understand, but the reason for the 2nd amendment or any assault weapon, or for that matter, any gun at all is needed in the USA, is to protect against TYRANNY.
Get it,,,,, so the government will not try and control the people, and become a dictatorship like Saddam or Hilter or Castro. The people will be able to defend themselves against the government. Now it seems impossible for the citizens to fight against the US military, but if the situation occurs the citizens will dominate.
