Dirk Nowitziki is a good player and you could make an argument that he is a bonafide superstar but he is not, and too answer your question he is overrated. I judge an athlete about how he plays in the clutch in close games, and sadly Dirk just doesn't play that well in the clutch. In the 2006 NBA Finals Dirk had a chance to solidify his superstar status. With his Mavericks up 2 games to 0 against the Miami Heat. With the series in control Dirk just had to play good for the Mavericks to win it all. Insttead he wilted unde the pressure and the Mavericks lost 4 games in a row in the decisive Game 5 and 6 Dirk looked lost at times and unsure of the outcome. However, Dwayne Wade looked confident and knew his team would win. Last year the Mavericks won 67 games Dirk had a great regular season, but during the playoffs he let the Warriors get inside his head. He only shot 38 percent and he went on record and said when his team was down 2 games to 1 if they lost Game 4 they would eventually lose the series he was right. In Game 6 I believe he only scored 7 points and shot a horrible percentage.

Lastly I look at alot of Maverick games in the clutch they really don't go to Nowitzki much. They go to Josh Howard, and Jason Terry to take decisive shots. Nowitzki is good but in no way is he on the level of a Kobe Bryant or Dwayne Wade. When it counts the superstars shine and other players wilt. Unfortunately at this stage of his career Dirk wilts under pressure. I'm not saying this can't or won't change, but if it doesn't Dirk might find it hard to win a championship during his career.

Dirk Nowitzki is a great player. In some way I do think he is overrated. Suns and Spurs are best the west.

Absolutely. He is a very good player who can put up big numbers. But MVP, no way. Josh Howard is the best all around player on that team and still getting better. Against the Warriors last year he was the only one who showed up for the series. Nowitzki is soft and is easily shut down by long and athletic small forwards. They should have traded him for Kobe in the offseason. Howard would be Kobes Pippen and they would be real contenders.

I don't know if u wanna use the word "overrated" but he hasn't been playing like the Dirk we all used to know. I still think Mark Cuban made a huge mistake by letting Steve Nash to the Suns. It's still early in the season, so they still have plenty of time to be a contender in the West. Not that they could EVER make it past my SPURS, but they'll b back n the thick of things fairly quickly.

Nahhh he's team hasn't been wining like a team with so much talent should be, but Dirk is not overrated. How many big man can really shoot like him over 7'0.....there just a hand-full. Now the MVP was a big discussion!

overrated?

is he a great shooter? - yes

is he clutch? - sometimes. sometimes he chokes.

is he a great defender? - no. he has never been accused of being that.

does he play the post and dominate the low block? - no. its one of the things people expect from a 7 footer. but its not his game.

- those are the things that are known about him. noone has ever said he's a great defender and low post player. and he has had great stretches where he could kill opponents with his shooting. but it is also known that he has often failed to deliver for his team. i don't see him as being overrated.

when someone claims him to be a great defender and awesome at the pivot, then he'll be overrated.

At times heck yea. like when he choked in the playoffs AFTER he won the MVP. BUT.... if u want a big man that can knock down jays w/o a problem he's ur guy.
