Fake, because-
They last for about 3 or 4 years (depending on what type you get)
You don't have that pesky spider problem
They look just as nice- without the mess
You can use a candle or some spray to make the room smell like you have a real one

I don't cut down real trees or buy cut ones anymore--there's a contribution to the environment for you!
However, I despise fake trees that try to look real--if you're going to go the fake route, you should do it with style and creativity!
We have a very rustic Texas cabin, and our inside tree is made of wrought iron and horseshoes. We have it decorated with chili pepper lights, bandannas, and assorted Texas and lodge-themed ornaments as well as a few special things the kids have made over the years.
This year, I bought a small evergreen tree (Sam's had them for about $15) and we planted it outside. I found some solar-powered lights to decorate it with so we would be conserving energy (and so I wouldn't have to buy extension cords to reach from the house down our long winding lane). My daughter and the little boy she babysits after school also made birdseed ornaments for the critters to enjoy--their little gift to them!
I felt very good about planting a live tree outside rather than decorating a dead one inside--I'm really kind of surprised the environmentalists haven't been on more of this sort of kick suggesting such. I guess in the cities people don't have yards to plant them in?

Fake. My cat leaves them alone. For some reason he attacks real trees. We have giant pine trees all around my house, we think he thinks there are birds in it. He won't even bat ornaments on a fake tree.

I like the fake kind the best. There is less mess, the needles are easier to vacuum up and you do not get any pine gum on the carpet.

Real live one ,to be planted some where later, donate to city park department. And fake one, to be able to move it to another room later.
