you can try, the last time I did that, a storm came overnight and I was stuck buying chains and driving home to sacramento for 8 hours of traffic and snowy roads.
Good luck.

Yes, Interstate 80 is the lifeline of Reno and is kept open at all costs during the day. Snowploughs go through constantly when snowing.
Watch the weather report for snow near Donner Summit. If it is snowing you will need chains for your tires. There are people there who will put on the chains for you for a fee.
I am going to drive up there this month.

last year me adn my hubby did and got stuck on donner pass for a few hours with 2 dogs. we didnt need chains though a some snow fell off a little cliff and blocked the road. i know they had a lot of snow this past weekend but its supose to be clear. we make the sunnyvale-reno trip at least once every other month (sister bro in law and nephew in reno) they're comming down next friday and so far it looks clear. its really rare if they make you use chains it all depends on the car you have

It is today, the weather is clear. I would use this thing called TV or the internet to look at the weather. If its snowing, don't go, if its not, then go!
