Isn't this the guy that said USC's Mike Williams would be a Hall of Fame receiver?

Where does Kiper get his NFL "credibility"?

What do you think of him? Is he an expert? How? Discuss.

Kiper is very much a self-made man. The reason he's considered such an expert now is that he was one of the first to really get out there and analyze the draft on a "micro" level. At the time he started in the early '80s, there weren't many guys doing draft analysis. As the draft became a bigger event, he was in a good position to be called in as an expert, and he's run with it since then.

As to his credibility, I believe that there are many less famous others who could do an equally good or better job. Like any of us, he has hits and misses, but I don't put more stock in what he says than I do in the opinions of other draft analysts. He thought Andre Ware would be a star and that Marshall Faulk shouldn't have been chosen so high, but he's also been right on a few (although I'm sure he wishes he'd never said that Ryan Leaf would be a better choice than Peyton Manning).

At this point, I think he gets to coast on reputation, like too many other so-called experts. I'll listen to him occasionally, but I use other inputs to help me make up my mind.

Kiper is overwhelmingly overrated, but I still buy his damn draft report. No, he's not much of an expert at all. ESPN would be better off with a former scout, but they seem committed to Kiper, who has become the face of the draft for some reason.

Mel Kiper Jr. It's self proclaimed.

In case you didn't know already, Mel Kiper is a incompetent idiot. I'll be the first to say Kiper is a smart man. He's got a nice racket going at ESPN. He, essentially, started all the pre-Draft craziness people get caught up in, making mock drafts, player evaluations, etc. So, from a business standpoint, Kiper is a genius.
However, from a substance standpoint (IE, does this guy actually know what he's talking about?), Kiper is a moron. Actually, if you think about it, we really are the morons. We continue to listen to what this greasy-haired nobody thinks about college players even though we all know deep down that he's full of it.

We call him a draft expert because when it comes to the draft, he's a guy that knows a lot. You've got to think of him as the weather man of football. He uses different tools to project where players will get taken in the draft. Those tools are things like a players size, speed, strength, intelligence and intagibles, along with their college performances. Then he looks at team needs to project where those players will go in the draft. Of course, there are always surprises, heck most teams don't even know who they are going to draft until 10 seconds before their time is up. He has done a pretty good job though over the years, normally if he projects someone as a top 5 pick, he'll go no later than 7-8. I wouldn't take his word as fact, but he does typically do a good job, and I look to him to find out where he thinks my favorite college players end up or who my favorite NFL team will take.

I did some research, Mel is the long lost, son of Archie and Betty Manning. Yes "oblong head" and "oval head" have a brother!! Sources say that little Mel was shipped off to the Phillipines as a new born, only because his head didn't match his siblings. Archie and Betty flipped a coin, and, well little Mel lost. More details as they become available.

its all he's been doing for 25 years. if there is such a thing as a "draft expert" he would be the only candidate.

BTW, with something as unscientific as a draft you are going to have some hits and misses. Thats how Tom Brady gets picked in the 6th round behind Tee Martin.

He's a "Draft Expert", because ESPN needed someone to fill that role and he got picked.
