you could try writing poetry or keeping a journal (sounds girly, but it works) to get out some of the thoughts that are clouding your brain.
you could try taking a warm bath with lavender bath beads (again, sounds girly, but lavender is relaxing) before you go to bed.
Yoga, meditation, interlude (or Enya) CDs, or drinking milk or de-caf herbal tea before going to sleep can help too.
It's more likely an emotional thing, though, so whatever feelings are bothering you or what you're worried about, or whatever, maybe you should try to express them. Pushing thoughts to the back of your mind doesn't make them go away and they always find a way to surface when you're trying to sleep. At least for me, anyway.

I agree with writing or talking to someone. If you choose to write, imagine that as you write about what's buzzing about in there, it's leaving your head and moving onto the paper to be dealt with at another time.
Another mental trick I use is when something is bothering me, I make a list of things I can do about it (you can do it mentally or write it down). After you've made your list (nothing is to silly as an answer you can write "win the lottery" as a solution to your problem, it doesn't have to be realistic) ask yourself if there is anything on it you can do right that second. if there is, do it. if not decide when you can (ie- I can buy a lottery ticket tomorrow at lunch). This helps me see I have a plan in place.
I've also tried imagining my thoughts as bubbles floating by. When they get close I can think about them, but like all bubbles, they eventually float away or pop after a few seconds. Let them, don't blow more, just watch the ones you have go by.

In all honesty - play Disc Golf (or other non-aggressive sport). I play every weekend (most week days too - I'm a discaholic though). I have never been happier.
If you do not decide to take up a sport - try to focus your energy elsewhere. Obviously you are obsessing over things and you need to learn to relax. Play a sport, video games, or other things that take all of your attention to exceed at. Reading and watching TV are things that allow you to get side-tracked too easily and spin you back in to worry-world.
No drugs, no herbs, just have fun.

i've got been down the anorexia highway sweety, and that i know how no longer undemanding that's to "stay clean" afterwards. the suitable thank you to lose/look after your weight is to no longer eat no longer something or much less, that is particularly to eat greater SMALLER nutrients via-out the day that are "metabolism bounce starters" and that they are going to shop you burning energy all day long. once you do no longer eat or eat little or no your physique is going into "starvation mode" the place it particularly holds all the energy you take in as fat because of the fact it thinks you're ravenous!!! particularly!!! that is how the south coastline weight-reduction plan works. And in spite of you do, PLEASE do no longer do atkins, that is sooo undesirable on your physique. do exactly 30 minutes an afternoon of a few style of excercise, take the stairs somewhat of elevators, park slightly farther away interior the automobile parking zone, drink a gallon of water an afternoon and decrease out the soda (do no longer drink weight-reduction plan soda, the sugar replace particularly makes you benefit weight!), eat lots of "organic" meals that are as on the fringe of unprocessed as you may get. clean fruit is outstanding for this. carry an orange on your bag, an apple, a banana, they're all great trip friendly meals. A bag of infant carrots, a low fat peanut butter sandwich on wheat bread, no refridgeration needed! i could be satisfied to furnish any further assist you go with. i've got been there and that i know how now to help in a healthy way :)

i sometimes have the same problem and unless i've taken a dose of something heavy (which never gives true rest), the thing that best works for me is breathing exercises. this is something which was shown to me rather than told - but, basically, it involves breathing as we don't often do - completely filling your lungs, start low and work up. i don't know whether it's to do with concentrating on breathing, or the actual increase of oxygen to the brain but, usually, if i do it right, i get a feeling of weightlessness which sends me gently off into the arms of slumber.

Have you tried talking to someone to offload what is on your mind.
sometimes the more you dwell on things the more impossible the become to untangle. A fresh point of view can help you to rationalise what is important and needs sorted now and what can wait.
It might let you get your troubles into some kind of managable order

Try writing down everything that goes round your head just before you go to bed.
It is as if you are temorarily offloading your problems.
They will still be there in the morning, but they may seem not as bad after a good nights sleep.
