I need an idea so that people who were not physically fit enough to lift a water jug could put it into the cooler without any problems.

along the same lines as a pulley but approaching the problem from a different angle. Another method of torque conversion is a water pump.

It's a great question and a great notion; for YOU to invent.

At 8.5 pounds per gallon, and approx. 2 pounds for the 5 gallon bottle.; the lift is 44.5 pounds. Most often the resevoir opening on top of the appliance is 36 inches to 48 inches high; approx. ( I never measured).

Beyond the weight is the issue of likely spillage, and what that entails.

You might try this. You might look up every distributor and bottler of that product and ask them. It seems that in 2007; their technology hasn't changed much.

Certainly there are dispensers that handle 2.5 or 3 gallon bottles; which means more changes, with heavy use; but that saves approx. half the weight of the 5 gallon.

Perhaps a simple pully or something similar?
