You need a common denominator, 36 would work.

11/12 is 33/36
5/18 is 10/36

Therefore,

33/36 - 10/36 = 23/36
.

11/12 with LCD = 33/36; 5/18 with LCD = 10/36: Subtract the 10/36 from 33/36 and your answer is 23/36. Hope this helped..

first find a common denominator (12*18 or even 36). Then however many times you multiply the denominator, you multiply the numerator that many times as well:

3(11)/36-5(2)/36

without having a same denominator, there is no easier way.
