Please could you help me solve the following. A method for working it out would be great. thanks for your help.
Jane's salary increased by 5% to £15750 . what was her salary before the rise?

Let x = amount of salary before raise

x + 5%x = 15750

1.05x = 15750

x = 15,000

that's it! :)

Right, you now know that 15750 is 105%.
Divide 15750 by 105, times that by 100, and you get the original amount back.

£15750 ÷ 5%
=£15750 x 100/105
=£1575000/105
=£15000

1% = £150
100% = £15000

Current salary is 105% of salary before rise.
Hence salary before rise is 100/105x15750=15000
