I have a reaction between potassium iodate and hydrochloric acid to form [ICl4]-. I need to work out a balanced equation for this.

All i know so far is this:

K[IO3] + HCl = [ICI4]- + ???

Also I believe the K is with the [ICl4]- so it could be that it is K[ICl4]- instead.

any help would greatly be apreciated.

K+ is a spectator. Ignore it.

There must be another product. You start with I(V) and end with I(III). So what is being oxidized? WIthout knowing that, you can't get started.
