Before putting a cup of salt in your tank I would find out why petco does this and maybe check with a specialty aquarium shop as to wether it is a good idea. I would hate for you to do that and have it kill everything in your tank.

A cup of aquarium salt is way too much unless you have a tank the size of an ocean. Some fish appreciate a little salt - 1 tsp/ 10 gallons, bettas, goldfish..., and some can't tolerate it all - corydoras.

If Petco employees were adding salt to every aquarium, especially a cup, I'd find out what else they were doing and do the exact opposite.

Sometimes, you can use aquarium salt to treat freshwater fish for certain diseases. Check with the pet store for how appropriate this would be in your case because not all fish can tolerate this treatment (e.g. catfish and many plants) and some take it better than others.

they do that to catch snails. the salt is not sea salt but water softener salt. so unless your having a snail out break you dont need to do this. i found this out by asking a petco employee after i noticed the same thing.
