No arrest; you just default and lose your 800 dollars

For your edit; He can't have you jailed for the balance; he can file for a judgement, costs, possibly garnish salary, bank accounts, liens on real property. Work out a payment agreement and stick to it,

When you cosign, on anything, you agree to be a cosigner until the debt is paid in full. If you do not want them to be able to come after you, then the only thing that you can do is to pay the rest of the $3500 yourself. That is what cosigning means: you agree that you will pay the money if he does not, for any reason, including job loss.

You don't get arrested, you just lose the money.
