Three.

Red. Green. Blue.

Now, if you have varying amounts of red green and blue, and the red green and blue dots are very close together on the screen then your eye can be fooled into seeing a whole spectrum of colours.

How many depends on the number of levels of red green and blue.

If you have 8 levels each then you can get 8*8*8 or 512 levels. 8 = 2^3, so 8*8*8 = 2^9 so this would be called 9 bit colour depth.

Typical colour depths are 8 bit (256 colours) 16 bit (about 65 thousand) 24 bit (about 16 million) and 32 bit (over 4 billion different colours)
