By pocket knife, are you talking like a SMALL folding knife? That's what I think at the words pocket knife. If you mean a larger one, then call it a lock blade (as most knives of over 3 inches have a locking mechanism). Or are you talking about something like out of "Crocodile Dundee"?
A small knife is an indespesible tool, you can open letters, CD's, etc easily. If you get locked out of your house without the keys, you can always wedge it behind the locking mechanism to open the door. Think McGuyver here.
A lock blade can also help out in those ways, but some are illegal to carry in certain states. (Mostly depending on blade length.) It can also be used to intimidate an attacker who has no weapon, but if used on someone who has a weapon, you may get hurt worse.
Now if she's wanting something that looks like a miniature sword to carry around, that's just crazy in these days. Might as well get her an assault rifle to go with it, a pait of Uzi's, or something like that.

girls who carry pocket knives arent all of a sudden a tomboy. Some of my best friends have knives, and wear dresses and skirts. They feel its for protection, or if hey get lost in the woods or something they'll have it. and you can't really force a girl to be 'lady-like', you know? She needs to choose who she wants to be. So if she wants to be a pocketknife carrying girl who wears skirts on occasion, let her. if she wants to be a tomboy, let her. you need to love her no matter what.

My sister in law carries a multi-tool and is quite handy with it. My brother teaches his daughters the safe and proper handling of tools. I don't see a problem if there is a need. I think girls ought to be taught to be self-sufficient tomboy or not.

Well, I dont think there is anything wrong with it.
We live in Texas, and as soon as we were allowed, My wife and I both went and got our concealed carry license.
For those of you in other states, that means that the government did all sorts of background checks on us and our "mental stability" and they know that we are law abiding citizens as opposed to criminals and if we want to carry a firearm concealed (i.e. under my jacket, in the back of my pants, in her purse) we are allowed.
Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
I think if she wants to carry a pocket knife, there is nothing wrong with that. Let her be who she is.

I see nothing wrong with it. A pocketknife is a wonderful tool. I use mine a lot to open packages, clean out cracks and stuff on things, and trimming loose strings. Just tell her not to castrate anyone.
