Britain never adopted the "Ace" system in WW1, so it is not as simple as comparing kills would suggest.
At the time Flight Sub-Lieutenant R.A.J. wangford was the most famous. He "downed "the first Zepplin to be brought down by a British pilot.(He bombed it)
Famous British Pilots would include Mannock 73 Kills
Bishop 72,
McCudden, 57
Ball 43
With Abert Ball (43 kills) being perhaps the best known by the public at the time.

"Famous" is a subjective concept. Perhaps Albert Ball or Edward Mannock.
Mannock was the British ace of aces in World War I.

Billy Bishop of Canada was the leading British Empire pilot with 76 claimed kills. I don't know who was the leading ace actually born in the UK, but in those days the Empire was the Empire.

I would say Billy Bishop is the most famous and that's not to undervalue Mick Mannock, but Bishop survived to make a contribution in WWII.
